In 1630, after nearly a third of Venice’s citizens were killed by a plague, the Venetian Senate made an offer to God that if he stopped the plague, they would build a church in honor of the Virgin Mary. The plague did end, and the Santa Maria Della Salute was built. Here it stands nearly 400 years later, sparkling at sunset on the Grand Canal. In the foreground, some of the city’s famed gondolas have retired for the evening. This high-quality puzzle transports you to the mysterious and romantic city as it sinks into the lagoon.
