Smithsonian  Armillary & Stand. 18 1/2 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches. Cast bronze, verdigris cast aluminum, copper, brass and steel. Will mount on all VM stands.  The image upon which this Armillary is based is found in a rare book from 1533 written by the German astronomer Johannes Schoner (1477-1547). The book itself is housed in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries' Dibner Library. The image of Atlas, who holds the heavens in the form of the armillary sphere, was taken from a page in Schoner's book and was carved by Michael Brunelle. It is cast in bronze and rests upon a base of cast aluminum. The Armillary Sphere is composed of elements made of copper, brass, aluminum. Stand sold separately.Smithsonian Armillary - Decor
