Apollo 16 Georgia State Flag - Collectibles
This State of Georgia flag was carried to the lunar surface on Apollo 16. The flag was carried by Apollo 16 astronaut, Charles M. Duke, Jr., and was among his personal possessions contained in his Personal Preference Kit, stowed aboard the Lunar Module Orion. The flag contains the following handwritten inscription from Duke: "This flag flown to the lunar surface on board Orion April 20th, 1972, Charlie Duke, Apollo 16."Included with this historic artifact is a certificate of authenticy, which consists of a letter typed on personal stationary and hand signed by Charlie Duke. The letter provides a detailed description of the flag, and also provides the following inspirational message: "Carry the flag into the future as a remembrance of the Apollo Era. May it serve as a symbol to remind future generations that, God willing, there is no goal or dream that is impossible to achieve..." NASA placed very tight weight restrictions on Personal Preference Kit items flown in the Lunar Module, so pieces flown to the lunar surface like this flag are extremely rare.
