Kurosawa's epic intertwining Japanese history around Shakespeare's plot from King Lear. Set in 16th century Japan, King Hidetora attempts to peacefully divide his kingdom among his three sons. However, they turn against each other and betray their father which gives rise to a whirlwind of chaos that ultimately drives the aging ruler insane, shatters his kingdom and destroys his family.
